I’ve been on the hunt for a quality, clean hair care routine for some time now. The ubiquitous toxins found in today’s most popular shampoos and conditioners began to irritate my skin to the point where I was forced to make the switch around the time I began my first cancer treatments years ago. Along the way, I’ve tested and experimented with tons of toxin-free labels. Today, I want to share my experience with one of the best I’ve found so far, Plaine Products.

Basics & Price

For starters, Plaine is more than a clean haircare and skincare brand. Their mission revolves around creating a product that’s both toxin-free and waste-reducing. It was Plaine’s reuse and refill program that honestly first attracted me to the company. You can read all about how the system works here. It’s pretty convenient and straightforward, and they cover the shipping costs for you. As I mentioned, I specifically tested Plaine’s haircare (shampoo and conditioner). At first, I must admit I was a bit reserved about spending $27 on a bottle. I must add that some users might find the conditioner’s consistency to be too thin or watery compared to other thicker conditioners, which can also lead to using more product per wash (not ideal given the price). But this was more than offset by the reuse program and the quality of the shampoo itself, which brings me to my next point: the hair care products themselves are incredible!

Experience & Effectiveness

After the first few uses, I noticed the difference. The first benefit I saw was hydration. My hair seemed to get healthier and healthier by the day; its shine improved, it was less dry, and my whole scalp started to feel better. Then, after a few weeks, I noticed that my hair had actually also become significantly softer. I don’t want to oversell the product, and of course, everyone’s hair is different, but this was just my personal experience. While it works well for many hair types, individuals with extremely dry or curly hair may not find it moisturizing enough. They might need to use additional leave-in treatments or oils for optimal results.

That said, the products smell great. Using the shampoo and conditioner is just a pleasurable experience for this reason alone. And though it shouldn’t matter much, the bottles are 100% aluminum and make for a great aesthetic. They look lovely in my bathroom. The products arrived in a cardboard box with kraft tape, so all of the shipping material was compostable and recyclable which I love.

A Brand with a Mission

Plaine Products is a company that started with a mission, stuck with it, and, along the way, has been able to succeed in making a very serious environmental impact. It’s one of the most impressive success stories I’ve encountered in my own toxin-free, limited-waste journey so far. On their website, they keep a running tally of plastic bottles they’ve eliminated from landfills and oceans and at the time of writing this review, the number sits at over 655,000!

The ingredients are vegan and cruelty-free, which is a huge bonus for me. I kept my subscription for a few months before moving on to test other clean hair care brands, but if I were to return to one for good, this might be the one.

You can explore Plaine Product’s available products on their website here. Be sure to pay close attention to the limited ingredients used in production! This is their strength, and alongside their zero-waste initiative, it is the main reason I recommend the brand to my family and friends.
