Packaging
75% of Elatepackaging is reusable, recyclable, or plantable, with promises to eventually reach 100%. Almost all packaging is glass, aluminum, compostable bamboo, or compostable paper. They’ve listed packaging details and disposal instructions for all products on their website. They also offer many refill options. For example, their Creme Concealer is pressed in a recyclable aluminum pan and comes packaged in compostable paper so that it fits into any magnetic palette. Plastic is really only ever included in the form of pumps or other small additions to packaging, which is also mitigated through the refill options that come without those components.
Material Sustainability
Elate’s ingredient lists are clear and transparent and include almost exclusively ingredients sourced from low-impact crops, par some exceptions like Vanilla Planifolia, which is now considered and endangered plant species and should be omitted from beauty products unless sourced from RSPO certified practices. Ingredients like stearic acid (palm-based) are sourced from RSPO certified suppliers who undergo regular audits.
Energy Use and Footprint
There is little information regarding production emissions and reductions. Elate is a Certified B Corporation, meaning they have likely taken action to measure and reduce their overall emissions. They claim carbon-neutral for a number of products.
Waste Management
There is little available information regarding waste mitigation strategies in production.
Business Model
