details:

Packaging

Summer Fridays has begun to incorporate more forever recyclables (aluminum and glass) and PCR materials into their packaging. However, plastic remains by far the most common material for primary packaging and there is little information regarding the extent of PCR material use. Secondary packaging is made from FSC-certified paper and is curbside recyclable. Most primary packaging is only recyclable through PACT, which can be out of reach for many consumers.

Ingredient Sustainability

The ingredients used in Summer Fridays’ products range in terms of their sustainability. Some products use mostly low-impact plant oils, biodegradable gums, and newer biotech preservatives, while others include alarming amounts of petro-derived chemicals and palm oil derivates. Some products boast EWG verification, while others have been assessed as High Hazard. There are many non-biodegradable ingredients that persist in aquatic ecosystems. Generally, ingredient sourcing sustainability is a mixed-bag, and there is significant room for improvement.

Energy Use and Footprint

There is little to no information regarding energy use and footprint when it comes to production and manufacturing.

Waste Management

There is little to no information available regarding efforts to mitigate waste in production or on the consumer side beyond their recycling initiative with PACT to incentivize recycling.

Business Model

Summer Fridays has a wide array of available products with little focus on multi-functionality. Quality is balanced with quantity and there is little emphasis on slow consumption.

non-toxic

score:

7 out of 10

details:

Summer Fridays products range greatly in their non-toxicity. Some products boast EWG verified certification, while others have been assessed as High Hazard. The brand includes many synthetic polymers with slight toxicity concerns, as well as preservatives like BHT, which is moderately toxic (hormone disruption). The presence of fragrance and allergens is of concern to those with sensitive skin.

social responsibility

score:

6.7 out of 10

details:

Summer Fridays manufactures their products in the US, which implies adherence to labor protections and regulations that are stricter than those who produce in less regulated countries. The brand practices community engagement through contributions to Heal the Bay, though much of this partnership relies on customer donations. The brand is Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free.
